Sport Climbing in South Africa
The Cape Peninsular is comprised of a range of Table Mountain Sandstone mountains from Cape Town to Cape Point.? The unique geological pressures which hardened ancient ocean floor and then lifted it up to 1000m above sea level have created one of the best climbers playgrounds in the world. Horizontal cracks, or rails at regular intervals are in interspersed with roofs, ledges, pockets flakes and gargoyle like protrusions to create climbing fun at all levels of difficulty.
Roughly 10 bolted sport crags lie within a 20 minute drive from downtown, all of which boast excellent climbs of all grades and panoramic views of the mountains and bays around the peninsular.? Whether you are looking for an introduction to climbing outdoors on easy and friendly rock, or challenging lines onoverhanging rock you are sure to find what you are looking for and more!
Full and half day trips can be designed according to ability, group size and make up, and weather. There is something for everyone to climb!
Beneath the Table Mountain Sandstone that forms these mountains is a layer of granite which, when exposed to weathering, forms perfect domes of gray rock.? Above the picturesque town of Paarl, two of these large domes provide single and multi-pitch sport climbing on cracks, dykes and small embedded crystals.? It?s a very different style of climbing in a beautiful setting.
As it is only 45 minutes drive from Cape Town, Paarl is an easy day trip to round out your slab climbing technique or taste the airy heights of multi-pitch climbing with the ease and security of pre-placed bolts.
With over 800 bolted climbs in the quartzite kloofs around this historic town, Montague is a sport climber?s paradise. Crags range from novice friendly slabs perfect for family picnics to extremely over hanging and desperate test pieces. While most of the climbing is under 25m, a few of the kloofs offer spectacular routes up to six pitches long! Accommodation at De Bos farmfeatures full facilities camping, dormitories, or cottages depending on your budget and preference.
All the climbing is within 30 minutes of De Bos and the restaurants, bars and hot springs of Montague.? You could be busy for weeks here!
While it is only half a days drive from Cape Town, South Africa, you may as well be in the south of France. Oudtshoorn is home to South Africa?s only limestone crag and it is of world class caliber.
Climb the enormous overhanging main crag on tuffas and stalactites or the razor sharp edges of the rhino hide slabs.
